Someone Laughed at Them
When other kids laughed at something they said, did, or how they looked.
Guide for Parents
What's Happening
Being laughed at is one of the most visceral rejection experiences. It triggers deep shame and the feeling of being publicly mocked and judged.
What They're Feeling
Intense shame, humiliation, anger (at themselves or the laughers), and often the sense that they'll be laughed at forever. They may replay the moment endlessly.
Watch For
Withdrawing from participation, refusing to answer questions in class, becoming very self-conscious, or angry outbursts when they feel mocked.
